What you'll need before you install Windows 10 on your Mac

Before starting anything else, be sure you have a Mac that supports Windows 10. Straight from Apple, these are the compatible models:

• MacBook Pro (2012 and later)
• MacBook Air (2012 and later)
• MacBook (2015 and later)
• iMac Pro (2017)
• iMac (2012 and later)*
• Mac mini (2012 and later)
• Mac mini Server (Late 2012)
• Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Do you have a Mac that can run Windows 10? Good! Make sure you have at least 64GB of free space on your hard drive for the Windows installation. During the installation process, you can set the Windows partition to whatever size you want, as long as the drive has enough storage.

Finally, update your Mac's OS to ensure there are no compatibility problems. You'll also want to perform a backup of your Mac in the (rare) case that something goes wrong.

How to download the Windows 10 ISO file

To start, we need to grab a Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft website. You can download it straight to your internal hard drive.

1. Navigate to the Microsoft Windows 10 ISO download page.
2. Click the dropdown menu below Select edition.

3. Click Windows 10 in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update section. You can download the Creators Update through Windows once it is installed.

4. Click Confirm.

5. Click the dropdown menu below Select the product language.

6. Click your language of choice.

7. Click Confirm.

8. Click 64-bit Download.

9. Click Save. The ISO file will now be downloaded.

Once the file has finished downloading, continue on to the next set of steps.

How to install Windows 10 with Boot Camp

Once you've downloaded a Windows 10 ISO, you can complete the following steps.

1. Launch Boot Camp Assistant from the Utilities folder in Applications.

2. Click Continue. Boot Camp should automatically locate the ISO file on your system.

3. Click and drag the slider in the partition section. It will be set to 48GB by default, but you can add as much storage as you want within the limits of the drive.

4. Click Install. Windows support software will now be downloaded.

5. Type your password.

6. Click OK. Your Mac will restart and you will see the Windows 10 setup screen.

7. Choose your language.
8. Click Install Now.
9. Type your product key or click I don't have a key. You can enter it after the installation.
10. Click either Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro based on your preference.
11. Click Next.
12. Click Custom: Install Windows Only.
13. Click Drive 0 Partition X: BOOTCAMP. Do not choose anything else.
14. Click Next. Windows 10 will now be installed. Your Mac will restart several times during the process.
15. Click Use Express Settings or Customize Your Installation when the Windows 10 setup screen appears. In this case, we use express settings, as all can be changed after the installation.
16. Type a username. You can also add a password.
17. Click Next.
18. Choose to use or not to use Cortana.

Windows 10 will now boot fully, and you'll be able to use Windows normally.

How to install Boot Camp software on your Windows 10 partition

When Windows 10 loads for the first time on your Mac, a Boot Camp software installer will automatically pop up.

1. Click Install.
2. Click I accept the terms in the license agreement.
3. Click Install.
4. Click Finish when the installation is complete.

This is an important process, as it installs a bunch of drivers and software that will help make your Windows 10 experience as good as possible on your Mac.

How to return to macOS from Windows 10

One of the best parts of Boot Camp is how easy it is to switch back and forth between operating systems.

1. Click the Show hidden icons button in the Windows 10 taskbar.
2. Click the Boot Camp button.

3. Click Restart in OS X.

Your Mac will now restart, and you'll be brought right back to macOS. To get back to Windows 10, and indeed another way to switch from Windows 10 to macOS, is to restart your Mac and hold down the Option key on your keyboard until a boot menu appears. From here, you can choose which OS to load.

Updating Windows 10 and more

Now that you have Windows 10 installed on your Mac, you can update it to the Creators Update.

The easiest way to do so is to use Windows Update.

1. Click the Start button.

2. Click the Settings button. It looks like a gear.

3. Click Update & security.

4. Click Check for updates.

The Creators Update should begin downloading and will install. Follow the steps on screen, and you'll be up to date in no time.

Apple Sanlitun, Apple's newest store in China, is opening today

Apple has announced that its newest retail store, Apple Sanlitun in Bejing, is opening to customers in the area later today.

Dell's biggest XPS laptop is also its most powerful while ensuring an entry-level model is still massively more affordable than Apple's MacBook Pro. It's big, but still incredibly portable, and with a range of specs to suit differing needs and budgets.

The MacBook Pro is packed with hardware to excite, but all that comes at a high price. It's obviously attached to some of Apple's killer apps like Final Cut, but on a hardware level, it doesn't outclass the higher-end XPS 17.

• 6-core and 8-core CPUs
• Access to apps like Final Cut and Logic Pro

Both of these laptops will appeal to folks looking for a portable machine with a larger display, and the XPS 17 is probably the best choice for most people. But there's always a strong case for the MacBook Pro, so long as your wallet stretches that far.

Is there a better family of Ultrabooks than Dell's XPS lineup right now? You'd be hard pushed to find such a thing, and the XPS 17 is, at its core, everything good about the XPS 13 and XPS 15, just, bigger.

Despite having a massive 17-inch display either in Full HD or 4K resolutions, the XPS 17 is a pretty compact laptop, coming in around the size that a 15-inch notebook might have been a year or two ago. The display has super skinny bezels, which helps keep the bulk to a minimum.

The base XPS 17 is $1,000 less than any MacBook Pro 16

But with the added size over the other XPS laptops comes additional room for hardware. The XPS 17 has options for Intel's latest 10th Gen Core i9 processor (albeit this isn't ready just yet) and NVIDIAs RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU, making it the most powerful XPS laptop yet.

There is a good amount of flexibility in the range, too. If you want the best color reproduction, there's a DCI-P3 4K display, but even the Full HD has 100% sRGB, making the XPS 17 a good choice for creators. There's also the option of a massive 97Wh battery, almost the largest you're allowed to fly with.

It's well priced, too, with an affordable entry point and a $1,900 asking price on the first of the dedicated GPUs, the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti. Even here, the XPS 17 significantly undercuts the MacBook Pro, and while the highest spec models do cost more than the base prices for the MacBook Pro 16, you're getting more hardware inside for your money.

The case for the MacBook Pro

Free Windows For Mac

The case for buying a MacBook Pro partly hinges around Apple's software and ecosystem. If it's something you're already invested in, then switching away might not be for you, and no Windows laptop will likely sway your decision. For example, the existence of software like Final Cut Pro may well still be reason enough to get a Mac. This is still Apple's killer feature, and if you're an existing user of the company's suite of applications, then you're probably going to want a new MacBook Pro.

Software like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are still the MacBook Pro's killer feature.

The Radeon Pro 5300M and 5500M are both excellent, extremely capable GPUs, and Apple's optimizations to its own software make it a dream pairing. For CPU and GPU intensive workloads, the MacBook Pro is still an excellent laptop.

There are compromises, though, not least the price premium. The MacBook Pro 16 starts at a whopping $1,000 more than the entry-level XPS 13. You could buy a budget gaming laptop with the difference!

You're also 100% all-in on either USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 with the MacBook Pro, or you're a fan of buying dongles to use your old accessories. It's a small thing, but it's essential to a lot of people they can use their existing equipment with a new laptop.

The bottom line

So which of these big laptops is the best one for you? Only you can decide, but we can make some recommendations.

The easiest to consider is the MacBook Pro. It costs more to even buy one than the lower-spec XPS 17 variants, and even compared to the highest end, it doesn't have any wow factor in the hardware. The reason to get the MacBook Pro really over any Windows laptop is always the same: Apple's software.

Windows Software For Mac

Apps like Final Cut Pro are system sellers, and if it's something you use or want to use, nothing on Windows will come close. If you're not attached to Apple's ecosystem, then you'll undoubtedly get more mileage for your money from the XPS 17.

Dell's latest is a big, beautiful laptop with either an affordable entry point or the option to have masses of performance. Unless you really need something only a Mac can offer, it's probably the one to get.
