The ability to express your ideas, thoughts, and opinions in clear and concise language is an art that few are able to master. With that thought in mind, let’s understand other reasons on why you want to learn new words and improve your English vocabulary.

Why Learn New Words to Improve Vocabulary

One of the most common reasons is the fact that you are preparing for SAT, GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, or other such exams.

A recent study has shown that learning new words can actually improve our brain’s ability to retain more information.

Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers - Harry S. Truman

You will not only sound smarter, but also actually get smarter because there is a direct correlation between learning new words and intelligence. Vocabulary is important for not just speaking, but also listening, reading, and writing.

Now that you understand the importance of expanding your vocabulary, let’s take a look at some of the best Android apps to help us do that.

1. Memrise

Memrise is an amazing vocabulary app that supports more than 200 languages. When I opened the app for the first time, it asked me to choose a difficulty level: beginner or skilled. Memrise has an offline mode so you don’t need an active Internet connection.

What makes Memrise a cool way to improve vocabulary is their intuitive and engaging games. They are fun and help with the learning process. Not sure how a word is pronounced? There is a voice mode. Plus, there are thousands of videos with user examples to watch.

Memrise is more suitable for people who don’t want to learn too difficult to use (read awkward) words, but regular and pronounceable words to improve their vocabulary bank. Learn to speak the local language with real locals using the social media feature.

There are no ads but Memrise has a subscription model in place starting at $9/month.

2. Quizlet

You are reading and practicing new words but how do you know how much information you have retained? This is where Quizlet comes in. Designed as a quiz game, it comes with flashcards that will test your vocabulary skills.

Found a word that is not in the app? You can create your own flashcards too. The app has millions of users around the world who are creating flashcards daily. All of this is at your disposal. A vocabulary built by the community.

What I like most about the app is the ability to choose from a wide range of categories with subjects ranging from sushi to beach wear. It’s a lot of fun and you can create your own list of flashcards.

Quizzes are divided into time, memory, and learn modes. There is also an audio transcription for learning the pronunciation.

You can create folders to store sets of flashcard for different classes if you are a student/teacher. The app is free to download but comes with ads and in-app purchases.

3. Word Games (Knudge)

When you install the app, it will read Knudge instead of its Play Store name. When you register for the first time, you will be asked to choose a course depending on your current proficiency level. There are courses like difference between confusing words like ‘advice’ or 'advise’, common words and phrases, idioms, and vocabulary builder.

Based on your selection, that you can change later, you will receive flashcards at regular time intervals. Why? Because trying to remember too many words at once can be difficult. That is why I never liked school!

There are a lot of exercises and games to choose from that will help you learn new words and improve your English vocabulary. Below each flashcard, there is a note icon where you can jot down quick thoughts.

A monthly subscription will remove ads, allowing you to take notes, and unlock more levels, games, and flashcards in general. I also like the ability to track my progress which gives me a feeling that I am moving forward, encouraging me to do more.

4. VoLT - Vocabulary Learning

VoLT is more focused on students and people who are preparing for exams like SAT, GRE, and TOEFL among others. This is not to say that the app is not good for others who just want to learn new words to improve their vocabulary.

Because the app is more focused on students, the UI has been designed with learning and testing methods in mind. Each flashcard comes with a pic and a lot of info like meaning, synonym, antonym, usage, and a memory key. What’s that?

Memory key is a sentence that has been designed to help you remember the word and it’s meaning. More often than not, these sentences will relate to everyday events and objects so you can relate to it. So, agog is a dog with gogs!

The app is free to use with no in-app purchases but only ads.

Busuu made the list because it has a social media element to it where users can interact with each other. This is a fun way to learn new words and also help fellow wordsmiths hone their skills. While learning new words is important, accent is equally important.

Top 4 Ways to Fix Google Duo Not Showing Contacts on Android and iPhone

English is an international language and forms for one of the most basic skills you would need to survive in the world today. It doesn’t matter which part of the world you are in, you may need to learn English to communicate and succeed in your corporate workplace. Most of us find it difficult to compete with others with a better grasp of grammar and vocabulary.

Don’t worry! There are plenty of apps available on the App Store that you can install on your iPhone or iPad to improve your English vocabulary and learn new words. We have already compiled a list of Android apps to learn English and improve vocabulary.

Today, we are sharing a list of iOS apps to help you improve English vocabulary and learn new words. Let’s begin!

1. Memrise

Memrise is not just good for learning and improving English vocabulary, but also other foreign languages — up to 200 of them. Memrise uses several tactics to make language learning an enjoyable process. There are many interactive games available. In each level, you will be taught about a new topic. Difficulty levels will increase as you climb up the ladder. Click on Audio icon to hear the pronunciation. Don’t forget to check your points in the profile.

Another feature here is object recognition. As seen in the screenshot below, it recognizes the keyboard. You point your camera at an object, and the app will tell you its name in your preferred language. Not always accurate, but fun.

There are also interactive chatbots for you to practice real conversations with, thousands of videos in different languages, offline mode, and a pro version to unlock these features. A monthly plan will cost you $8.99 while a lifetime plan will cost $99.99. It is suitable for travelers who want to learn the local language of the place they are visiting.

2. Word of the Day

Word of the Day will help to improve your vocabulary one word at a time. The app sends daily notifications with a new word, or you can use the card style layout to flip through new words. Read or heard a new word? Use the search function to find its meaning on Google which works right inside the app.

You can set a time for the daily notification and choose the voice of either a female or a male. There are a few countries to choose your preferred accent (US, UK, India, Canada, and Australia). This will help you learn the pronunciation in your native tone. Another fun feature is the ability to share a word with your friends and challenge them to fill in the missing letters.

3. Magoosh

Magoosh is a popular platform with several apps focused on teaching you new words, improving your grammar, and helping you prepare for exams like GRE, TOEFL, GMAT, etc. I would suggest Vocabulary Builder app. Learning new words and their meanings is one thing, applying it to construct sentences is another. This is why Magoosh also shows sentences as examples.

There are many levels to unlock, and as you progress, the words get more difficult. Finally, there is a Play option where you can challenge someone to see who gets more words right. That will help you spend more time with the app, and you will end up learning more words.

4. 7 Little Words

Crossword puzzles have always been a great way to learn and teach new words. 7 Little Words is a cool crossword puzzle with a simple idea. Each puzzle will leave you with 7 words, 7 clues, and 20 letters. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find those words using the clues with the given block of letters.

5. Vocabador

Vocabador is built to help you improve your vocabulary and learn new words in a graphical and interactive interface. If you aren’t sure what’s with the theme of the app, learn about Lucha Libre, a form of wrestling prevalent in Latin America. This new style makes the app fun to use. There are two modes to choose from. One is Vocab Training where you will be learning new words in flash cards.

The other is Vocab Challenges where you will be facing Lucha Libre wrestlers in 12 different avatars. Choose your opponent and fight well. Each wrestler will throw 36 unique words/punches at you. You need to guess/dodge them. The app will cost you $1.99, but it is completely worth it.

6. Hello Talk

Hello Talk is not just a language learning and vocabulary app, it is also a community of users who want to learn and improve their English (or any other language). You can talk to the real native people via chat or audio messages. This way, you also learn the appropriate pronunciation in the native language.

Hello Talk believes that the best way to learn is communication and not curriculum. I think that makes a lot of sense. You get real-world experience with frequently used words and phrases from real people. While creating your profile, it is mandatory to have a profile pic and choose your language level or proficiency. The app also has chatbots and lessons in case you are feel shy to speak with real people.

The app is free to download and try, but you will need a membership plan starting from $4.99/month to access its different features.
